Lovely Lilacs

Lovely Lilacs

Originally uploaded by darbyfieldinn.
My featured flower is the Lilac. I have a tree outside my office and have had the pleasure of smelling them all day! Now I know Spring is in full swing…for those of you who share my passion for lilacs, enjoy them while you can, they’ll only be around for a couple of weeks. New shoots come up near the main tree, so dig them up and transplant them where you wish, like outside your bedroom window. They appreciate sweet soil, so hit them with the lime in the early spring and make sure to give them plenty of water.

Things To Do In the Spring…

Friday, May 25th, 2007

The bugs are officially out in force, but that’s no reason to stay at home.
There are some great activities going on here and in the Valley to get you outside and keep you a couple of steps ahead of the
flying
pests.

Our outdoor heated pool opens this weekend!

Splashing around
will keep you cool while you’re catching some rays and sipping on the chilly beverage of your choice (served in plastic, of course).

You can
also go under for a few seconds to escape horseflies.
You
can also take a brisk walk around the grounds and our nature trails.
See how many of the flowers you can name, or maybe catch sight of some wildlife.

This
will help you
burn up a little extra space to fill
later with some delicious food when you join us in the dining room!

Tin Mountain Conservation
Center
is offering Saturday morning nature walks from 10am - 12pm each Saturday.
You never now
what they’ll be doing, but you know you’ll have fun and learn something.

Two added bonuses:

Bugs aren’t usually early risers and you can burn off
the big country breakfast you enjoyed before leaving the Inn!
For those who like to start the weekend early, Joe Jones Sports is hosting bicycle tours around the area beginning at
5:15 every Thursday until the end of October.
If you can’t bring your own, you can rent one for $25 for the day.
Perfect for all skill levels, too.
Bugs are easy to stay ahead of on a bike, just don’t smile too much thinking about how you outsmarted them…

We’ve posted a new canoe special on
our website and as usual, our last minute special
will save you some money.
So don’t waste time at home avoiding the bugs, come
have fun with us in the White Mountains of New Hampshire!

Crabapple blossoms in our front yard

Tuesday, May 22nd, 2007

Once again, the Darby Field Inn’s flowering crabapple tree has outdone itself…it was loaded with sweet smelling blossoms that had the bees singing its praises. Until the rain came. Even with the gloomy weather this weekend, all our guests were commenting on its plentiful blooms…

The Last Weekend Before Bug Season Begins…

It’s Officially the Beginning of Flower Season!

Our garden has now reached the point it’s difficult to pick only one flower thats blooming…there are at least five or six to choose from. I’ve decided to feature one of the more obscure (at least to me…) this week. Euphorbia has the softest foliage, and spring green leaves crowned with small yellow clusters of flowers. Faye tells me it is a vigorous ground cover, doubling in size each year. This is a plant you can share with friends and family; its root ball can be divided easily and transplanted in your own garden or elsewhere. It enjoys the full sun and turns a delightful rusty orange in the fall. Although I said I would feature only one flower, I feel our flowering crabapple tree, pictured below, deserves some attention as well…it is absolutely gorgeous this year!

Just a little reminder: the Home and Garden Show is this weekend at the Fryeburg Fairgrounds. You’ll be able to find your own garden gems, talk with flower experts and get some delicious cook out recipes, all in one place! Our Last Minute Special features room rates that encourage you to get out and walk around the mountains, the golf course, or the garden show this weekend! So, if you’ve been thinking about visiting the White Mountains and the Darby Field Inn this spring, wait no longer…now is the perfect time to enjoy both!

Perfect Time to Experience Springtime in the Mountains!

Hard Work and Warm Weather Produce Results!

Spring is my favorite time of the year, here in New Hampshire. The sunshine is warm, gentle breezes blow, the bugs haven’t arrived yet, and the flowers start blooming! Before and after pictures are an amazing way to really remember how much things change…like our gardens. The time difference between thes two pictures is two weeks, and look at how green everything is! We have a couple new flowers peeking out every week, which is exciting for me; I love to take pictures of their bright blooms!
This weekend is the perfect time to witness these excellent conditions for yourself; we’ve posted a Last Minute Special that makes a visit here irresistible…so grab your hiking boots, mountain bikes, sunscreen and appetites and book a stay with us Friday, Saturday and/or Sunday - you won’t regret it! Don’t forget Mother’s Day is Sunday and we’ve got a great weekend package for her, too! Call (800)426-4147 and mention this blog for additional savings! Until next time, enjoy spring wherever you are…those pesky insects are on their way!
