As I mentioned in a previous blog, this little storm is what most old-school New Englanders were waiting for to break up the super nice weather we’ve been enjoying. While this snowstorm was neither unexpected nor (thankfully) very severe, my hope is that all the new blooms and leaves on the trees and flowers aren’t permanently damaged for the season. However gloomy I might be about the sudden change from spring back to winter, I can’t deny how lovely the snow looks laying atop the flowering shrubbery! Mother Nature: cruel, yet beautiful. Welcome to New England!
Here at the Inn we are deep cleaning EVERYTHING getting ready for a busy summer season. We look forward to greeting old and new friends, and hosting a few weddings, too. Be sure to check our website often for special deals for every season!

Today the weather is GORGEOUS, as it is supposed to be all week, and I spotted the first crocus of the spring poking up in one of our sun drenched beds! I talked to my Mum, living in Asheville, NC, yesterday, and our temps surpassed theirs (they had rain, rain, and more rain). I’m still waiting for the other shoe (or boot, here in New Hampshire) to fall, but you just gotta be outside in this weather! Enjoy!

I wait all year ’til Christmas so I can kill some more poinsettias over the holidays. Its not that I have anything against these plants, they just always die on me, despite my every effort (or, perhaps, because of my every effort!). This year I have resolved to do better, mainly by putting someone else in charge of their care. Waneeta gave me a pointer, so the one I have at home may survive, which I will share with you: NEVER water them from the top, only allow them to soak up water they are placed in for a short period of time. Poinsettias don’t like to be either super wet, or super dry, so only let them soak up water for, say 5 minutes every other day. They should never be wet to the touch on top of their soil. This is also appropriate for orchids. Thanks for the advice, Wan. I’ll still let you take care of the Poinsettias here at the inn, and keep your fingers crossed for the one I have at home!

The First Sign of Spring…Originally uploaded by darbyfieldinn.
Our crocuses have been blooming over the past few days. While it seems odd to see them next to melting snow banks, they are surely the first sign that spring is finally here! We are returning from vacation this weekend, and are offering a great 2 for 1 special. If you can make it up to see us, don’t miss out on the savings…we look forward to hearing from you

Peonies!
We have five different colors of peonies blooming here at the Inn right now. I have waited in anticipation for them to bloom for most of June, and now the heavy winds are threatening to shorten their season…we made several sweet-smelling bouquets for the Inn, and I took plenty of pictures to tide me over til next year!

My Favorite Kind of Spider…
This flower, the spider wort, is fast becoming a favorite of mine. I love its slender leaves and the clusters of vivid purple flowers that close up at night! A great addition to any perennial garden…

Lovely Lilacs
Originally uploaded by darbyfieldinn.
My featured flower is the Lilac. I have a tree outside my office and have had the pleasure of smelling them all day! Now I know Spring is in full swing…for those of you who share my passion for lilacs, enjoy them while you can, they’ll only be around for a couple of weeks. New shoots come up near the main tree, so dig them up and transplant them where you wish, like outside your bedroom window. They appreciate sweet soil, so hit them with the lime in the early spring and make sure to give them plenty of water.
