It’s always nice to wake up to a sugar coating on the world…like today! I’m hoping we have a winter FULL of snow, since I will be back on the ski slopes this season…thank you, husband AND insurance! This should work out for our guests, too, as our old-fashioned sleigh rides are SO popular! FYI: our days and hours of operation have changed, so PLEASE call us to confirm your sleigh ride! Also, the cookie tour is going on next weekend; even if you come last minute, for one day, don’t miss this SUPER fun holiday event! AND don’t forget to bring your ziplock baggies if you do…hope to see you here!

Surprise April Snow…

As I mentioned in a previous blog, this little storm is what most old-school New Englanders were waiting for to break up the super nice weather we’ve been enjoying. While this snowstorm was neither unexpected nor (thankfully) very severe, my hope is that all the new blooms and leaves on the trees and flowers aren’t permanently damaged for the season. However gloomy I might be about the sudden change from spring back to winter, I can’t deny how lovely the snow looks laying atop the flowering shrubbery! Mother Nature: cruel, yet beautiful. Welcome to New England!

First Flower of Spring!

Today the weather is GORGEOUS, as it is supposed to be all week, and I spotted the first crocus of the spring poking up in one of our sun drenched beds! I talked to my Mum, living in Asheville, NC, yesterday, and our temps surpassed theirs (they had rain, rain, and more rain). I’m still waiting for the other shoe (or boot, here in New Hampshire) to fall, but you just gotta be outside in this weather! Enjoy!

It’s Official…Spring is here!Originally uploaded by darbyfieldinn.We never thought it would be here so soon, but all the snow has melted and the flowers and seasonal birds are back! This is the perfect time to visit us for spring hiking and/or relaxing in the peace and quiet. Our dining room is now open Thursday through Sunday, which is another cause for celebration! Our crocuses have been blooming over the past few days. While it seems odd to see them next to melting snow banks, they are surely the first sign that spring is finally here! Here is an example of Spring in New Hampshire. We received several inches of snow, pushing us ever nearer to breaking our 100 year record. While it has been a GREAT winter, we are all ready to run barefoot through green grass! Maybe in a couple of months…in the meantime sleigh rides are still going strong and the snowshoeing and x-country skiing conditions are fantastic!
The inn will be closed for mud season from April 6 through 17. Hopefully when we return there will be a little less of the white stuff. We are running some Super Spring Specials during April and May, so don’t forget to check out our website from time to time…

Fall foliage was absolutely beautiful this year! For those of you who weren’t here to see it, here’s a taste of what you missed. We were quite busy for a few weeks, and luckily everyone got to see some color, as the event was nicely spread over 4 or 5 weeks. Folks had such a great time in 2006 we are already getting reservations for next year!

Lovely Lilacs

My featured flower is the Lilac. I have a tree outside my office and have had the pleasure of smelling them all day! Now I know Spring is in full swing…for those of you who share my passion for lilacs, enjoy them while you can, they’ll only be around for a couple of weeks. New shoots come up near the main tree, so dig them up and transplant them where you wish, like outside your bedroom window. They appreciate sweet soil, so hit them with the lime in the early spring and make sure to give them plenty of water.

Spring is my favorite time of the year, here in New Hampshire. The sunshine is warm, gentle breezes blow, the bugs haven’t arrived yet, and the flowers start blooming! Before and after pictures are an amazing way to really remember how much things change…like our gardens. The time difference between thes two pictures is two weeks, and look at how green everything is! We have a couple new flowers peeking out every week, which is exciting for me; I love to take pictures of their bright blooms!
